Glossary ~ U-Z
-U-
Uncharged ~ Material having atoms with the same number of electrons in orbit as the number of protons in the nucleus. Having no electrical charge.
-V-
Via ~ A small hole drilled then plated or etched into a printed circuit board for continuing connectivity to a different layer of the printed circuit board.
Virtual Ground ~ Point in a circuit that is always at approximately ground potential. Often a ground for voltage, but not for current.
Volt (V) ~ Unit of potential difference or electromotive force. One volt is the potential difference needed to produce one ampere of current through a resistance of one ohm.
Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) ~ Oscillator whose output frequency depends on an input control voltage.
-W-
Watt (W) ~ Unit of electrical power required to do work at the rate of one joule per second. One watt of power is expended when one ampere of direct current flows through a resistance of one ohm.
Wavelength (λ) ~ Distance between two points of corresponding phase and is equal to waveform velocity divided by frequency.
Wireless ~ Term describing radio communication that requires no wired between two communicating points.
-X-
X-Axis ~ Mathematical Horizontal Axis.
-Y-
Y-Axis ~ Mathematical Vertical Axis.
-Z-
Z-Axis ~ Mathematical Perpendicular Axis to X-axis & Y-axis.
Zener Diode ~ Semiconductor diode in which reverse breakdown voltage current causes the diode to develop a constant voltage. Used as a clamp for voltage regulation.
